As news about electronic medical records and pharmacy tracking programs continues to buzz, online search engine powerhouse Google Inc. is writing its own prescription.
Google, with the help of medical center Cleveland Clinic, is conducting a trial of a medical records service that would provide patients with password-protected online access to their personal health profiles. Medical histories, as well as information about prescriptions, would make up part of Google’s service, according to a story from The Associated Press.
Internet giants Microsoft Corp. and AOL have introduced similar record-keeping programs, and the Cleveland Clinic already has its own online service, according to the story.
Because medical records on the Internet would not be covered under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the story mentions that government, marketers and others might gain access, or easier access, to personal medical information.
