A mid-February report in The Kansas City Star said 44 states were reporting flu activity, and another story from newsday.com claimed that a nationwide influenza epidemic was under way.
Although neither of the stories went as far as to claim this would be the worst flu outbreak in X number of years, both reported that the flu strains this year are unique. In fact, this year’s vaccine is effective for only about 40 percent of the flu viruses, according to The Star. And newsday.com reports that adult mortality this year is higher than in the past two.
The flu annually draws more than 200,000 people to hospitals, and 36,000 die from the virus, both news outlets report. Physicians treat only a small amount of flu sufferers each year, according to Newsday.
The Star says the flu season can extend into May.
